The hip flexors are a group of muscles responsible for flexing the hip ( bringing the knees towards the chest). When the hip flexors shorten, they have the potential to pull the pelvis in a forward position which forces the lower back into hyperlordosis (increased neutral curvature). This is one of the main culprits for lower back pain.
